There is an old union saying, “If you’re not at the table then you’re on the menu.” The GOP-controlled legislature is betting that Kentuckians aren’t paying attention to what is happening in Frankfort.

PLEASE NOTE: This message is rather lengthy. But please don’t let that discourage you from reading. There is a great deal going on in Frankfort that you should know about…

Just yesterday, Day 2 of the session, Republicans rammed three pieces of legislation through committee that are aimed at weakening organized labor and taking money from the pockets of Kentucky’s working families. “Right to work” (HB1) and the repeal of the prevailing wage (HB3) both passed through committee without a real hearing or enough notice for legislators or the public to read the legislation.

It gets worse: Kentucky union members in attendance, hoping to express their opposition to HB1 and HB3, were locked out of the committee room. This is your democracy, folks.

The Senate also passed SB6 which is aimed financially crippling unions through restricting how dues can be collected.

Today, as you read this email, our labor brothers and sisters are continuing their fight for, at the least, fair and open hearings on issues that will impact the financial stability of families across the Commonwealth.

Show your solidarity with Kentucky’s workers – call your Representative today and tell them you stand with Kentucky’s workers and oppose the final passage of HB1 and HB3. And let your Senator know that SB6 is wrong for Kentucky.

Reproductive rights are also at risk. HB2, the “Ultrasound Informed Consent Act,” will force abortion providers to show women a sonogram of the embryo or fetus and require them to provide audio of the heartbeat. Women may “avert their eyes” but providers are then required to verbally describe the placement of the fetus and describe the presence of any visible organs. The patient is then required to sign a certificate verifying she saw the sonogram and heard the heartbeat. The goal of this legislation is to make the process of obtaining an abortion, a constitutionally protected right, demeaning for women.

SB5 will outlaw all abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Only 1% of abortions are performed after 20 weeks, usually due to critical medical concerns. This legislation is aimed at getting a foot in the door – the first step in eventually making all abortions illegal in Kentucky.

Call your legislators at 800-372-7181 and tell them that Kentucky’s women do not deserve HB2 and SB5.

HB105 and HB106, sponsored by Democrat Rick Nelson, were introduced yesterday and target members of the LGBTQ community. HB105 would roll back local protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (i.e. Lexington’s Fairness Ordinance).

HB106 is almost identical to North Carolina’s transgender bathroom bill – mandating that all public multiple occupancy restrooms in the state (in courthouses, schools, university, city buildings, etc.) be designated for use by persons of the stated “biological sex” only.

Again, call your legislators at 800-372-7181 and tell them that HB105 and HB106 are a disgrace and shouldn’t be part of a 21st Century Kentucky.

These are just a few of the regressive policies currently under consideration by the General Assembly.
